Over the last two decades, advances in dental implants have transformed the face of cosmetic & restorative dentistry, providing a popular and cost-effective way to replace missing or damaged teeth. If you’re currently wearing dentures that slip out of place, or have been told you’re not a good candidate for a bridge, Dr. Blaustein and his staff at Chelsea Dental Aesthetics can determine if dental implants are a viable option for you.

There’s no reason to live with an imperfect smile, or suffer pain and embarrassment from ill-fitting dentures. Dental implants, which can last for more than 25 years, are an excellent option for restoring your smile – and overall confidence!

Dental implant overview

Despite major improvements in dental care, many people still experience the emotional and physical anguish caused by tooth loss – typically resulting from gum disease, decay, injury and untreated gingivitis. Not only do missing teeth make chewing difficult, it can also lead to gum and bone atrophy and alter your facial appearance. For years, the go-to treatment was either a fixed bridge or dentures.

Unlike either of those treatment options, a dental implant acts as a replacement tooth root that is placed into the jawbone. Dental implants are composed of biocompatible titanium, which will support your new replacement tooth (a custom made crown), after the metal post fuses with your bone.  Surgical grade titanium is incredibly durable and will never be rejected by the body. The posts can be placed in the upper or lower jaw, for multiple teeth or single tooth implants.

One of the best aspects of dental implants is that they look and feel the same as your natural teeth. And as long as you practice good oral hygiene, with regular dentist check-ups at six-month intervals, implants that properly fuse with the bone have a 98 percent success rate.

Advantages of implants compared to other tooth replacements

At Chelsea Dental Aesthetics, Dr. Blaustein will explain your options for dental implant placement and other tooth restoration alternatives, in addition to outlining advantages and potential drawbacks of each.

Key advantages of dental implants compared to dentures and bridges include:

  • Improved comfort
  • Chewing is easier since implants function like your own teeth
  • Maintain the integrity of your jawbone
  • Fixed and permanent, will never slide out of place
  • Look more natural compared to dentures
  • Much easier to clean
  • Improved oral health
  • Will never suffer from tooth decay
  • Help prevent bone decay
  • Less invasive than a bridge
  • Preserves adjacent teeth
  • Cosmetically more pleasing
  • Can help boost self-esteem
  • May last a lifetime – 25 years or longer

In short, dental implants are the most effective tooth replacement option for those who want a complete smile makeover with no worries of a denture slip while eating their favorite foods. Moreover, dentures only last eight to twelve years, whereas implants last for decades.

Good candidates for dental implants

The good news is that most healthy patients are ideal candidates for dental implants. Dr. Blaustein will discuss your medical history, take X-rays and do an oral examination to assess whether you’re a good candidate. Underlying conditions such as cancer, advanced periodontal disease or uncontrolled diabetes may affect the success rate of dental implants, but doesn’t preclude the procedure entirely.

If you have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implants, you’re on your way to a more beautiful smile.

Dental implant procedure and recovery

When receiving single or multiple teeth implants, Dr. Blaustein first places the titanium post that replaces the tooth root below the gum line and into the jawbone. After this first step, the bone surrounding the implant must fuse in a process known as osseointegration, which may last for several months. During this period, patients are encouraged to stick with soft foods to help make the healing process more comfortable.  The titanium post is fitted with a temporary crown until patients are ready for a permanent replacement tooth.

After the osseointegration is completed, Dr. Blaustein will affix an abutment to the titanium post so that a custom porcelain crown may be permanently affixed.  The crown will mimic the color, size and shape of your other teeth to blend in more naturally. If you are getting more than one dental implant, Dr. Blaustein may recommend implant-supported dentures, which are custom made to give you a radiant smile without the hassle or mess associated with traditional dentures.

Most of our dental implant patients are pleasantly surprised with the ease of the procedure, which is generally performed using local anesthesia. Minor discomfort, swelling and bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours, and mild soreness can be relieved with ibuprofen or Tylenol.

You will be able to return to your normal diet and daily routine after seven to ten days, though some patients may need to maintain a diet of soft foods for up to six weeks post-operatively. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and lack of good oral hygiene can impede the healing process.
