Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, referred to as “sleep dentistry,” relaxes you and alleviates dental anxiety while minimizing discomfort during your procedure.

There are multiple levels of sedation, including:

  • Minimal sedation: you’re in a relaxed state and awake
  • Moderate sedation: You’re not going to remember much of the procedure and you may slur your words
  • Deep sedation: you’re almost unconscious, but you can still be awakened

These different levels depend on the sedation techniques you use, and it is recommended you schedule a consultation with Dr. Blaustein to assess your own personal situation.

Why is nitrous oxide used in sedation dentistry?

Nitrous oxide is a non-irritating, sweet-smelling, and colorless sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen. Dr. Blaustein places a mask over your nose which helps you relax. In addition, you’re able to breathe on your own and remain in control of your bodily functions.

The advantages to using nitrous oxide are:

  • It works rapidly and within a matter of minutes, you experience the relaxation and pain killing properties
  • The dentist can alter the depth of sedation by increasing or decreasing it
  • Extremely safe with no side effects on your lungs or heart
  • Helps in minimizing gagging

If you choose to use nitrous oxide, you also have the added benefit of driving yourself home after your treatment since this type of sedation wears off quickly.

What is oral sedation?

Oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate sedation in which patients take a pill before they come into the office for their appointment. In addition, there is another dosage to take once they arrive.

There are two different types of pills you can take including sedative-hypnotics which induce calmness, yet include drowsiness and even help you fall asleep. The other type is anti-anxiety pills which relieve anxiety placing you in a relaxed state.

The advantages to using oral sedation include:

  • You’re in a more relaxed state
  • You’ll be able to sit comfortably through a lengthy procedure

If you use oral sedation, the medication’s effects may last an additional few hours, so you must have someone take you home after the completion of your procedure.
