Intrinsic Benefits of a Beautiful Smile

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) recently published an article saying that an investment in your smile will go a lot further, last a lot longer, and make you feel a whole lot better about yourself than any of the most de riguer and expensive fashion items and accessories.

In fact, 68% of women surveyed said they believe that the quality of their smile has a significant impact on their self confidence. Despite that statistic, 26% of those surveyed felt that by not going to the dentist enough, their smile was negatively impacted.

A woman will buy an expensive bag or pair of shoes thinking it might affect how they feel about themselves. But 53% of those surveyed say they look at a person’s smile first, not at their $4,000 designer bag. Another 59% said they are most attracted by a person’s smile, not by their clothes or accessories.

Good oral hygiene goes a long way

The AACD says in addition to daily brushing and flossing, a routine checkup and cleaning once a year is essential maintenance for investing in a great smile. They also point out food and liquids that are smile friendly and others that can do long-term damage.

Nutritionist Karen Krchma and AACD member dentist Dr. Shawn Frawley designate certain foods as “super smile foods”. Among them are natural bacteria-killing basil, broccoli which prevents enamel erosion by creating a protective film on the teeth, and foods high in Vitamin A like carrots, which help build tooth enamel.

Cheese contains lactic acid which prevents tooth decay; ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that support healthy mouth tissue; and green tea contains antioxidants which in turn reduces the bacteria that promotes gingivitis.

Known “smile killers” are sodas, candy, coffee, tea, red wine, and sugary cocktails which can stain the teeth and cause tooth decay.

Laser whitening & same day implants – worth the investment

Laser teeth whitening may be the quickest way to achieve a brilliant white smile. Dr. David Blaustein can show you how this fast and easy procedure can lighten your teeth up to ten shades in just one visit. Here at Chelsea Dental Aesthetics, Dr. Blaustein prefers Zoom laser teeth whitening, which uses a hydrogen peroxide cleaning agent to achieve a brilliant smile in three 15 minute steps.

Even for someone with complete tooth loss, same day implants can provide a full set of natural-looking and functional replacement teeth in just one office visit! Dr. Blaustein’s All on Six procedure mounts a new set of replacement teeth onto implants that are affixed to the existing bone. Best of all —  the All on 6 procedure virtually eliminates the need for invasive bone grafts.

A new smile courtesy of laser teeth whitening or same day implants will give you confidence in both social and professional circles. Another way to transform your smile to one you’ll be proud of is applying veneers or thin shells of tooth colored material made of porcelain or resin. Porcelain veneers can be molded to the proper shape, length, and color to cover chipped, broken, discolored, or misaligned teeth.

The AACD says that if you want to make outstanding first and lasting impressions, there’s no substitute for a great smile. It is possibly the single most important investment in your appearance that is likely to give you the greatest rewards in self-confidence.
